Riverside FM 2004 -
Background
Riverside FM
2004 was a collaboration
between Womenís Radio Group, the Workersí
Educational Association and Riverside Studios. Financial support for the
training of the young people was provided by the EsmÈe Fairbairn
Foundation.
Building on the successful
radio project in 2002, Riverside FM 2004 brought to the local area a
fresh, up-to-the-minute mix of community and arts programmes, including
music, speech, drama, and the history of the area. This year's
broadcast included original programming from young people,
community groups and the voluntary sector, with opportunities for local
people to put their voice on air to promote and gather support for their
special interest.
With the financial support
of The EsmÈe Fairbairn Foundation over 100 young people were trained in radio production and presentation
- their choice of
music and speech programmes were successfully broadcast across the
schedule. Local history programmes featured famous and infamous people,
pubs, buildings and the River. A vibrant mix of programming
celebrates Celtic Caribbean crossings; Panjabi Swings, the festival of
Tian; live performance poetry; International Circus with samba
dancing stilt walking; a festival of short radio dramas; "Dream
Job" - how to get the job you've always wanted; previews and reviews
on what's on at Riverside Studios.
In addition to providing a
useful and entertaining service for those who live and work in West
London, Riverside FM offered an invaluable opportunity to those
planning a career in radio, giving them that ëbreakí they need. For
young people especially, involvement in the less formal learning
environment of radio training and programme production was vital to help grow their
confidence in many other areas of life. The Riverside FM studios
were a hub of activity, ideas
and local information, with listeners encouraged to contact the station
through the dedicated website. In the past international listeners have
proved keen to access Riverside FM. Email
